Narendra Modi’s Initiative On The Significance Of Efficient Transportation System

Transportation, as we all know is the movement of goods and people from one place to another. Transportation plays a very important role not only in our lives but also in strengthening the economy of our country. An efficient transportation results in economic prosperity and social well-being. Some of the ways in which transportation has proved to be a boon for our country are:

CREATES EMPLOYMENT

One of the ways in which transportation contributes to the GDP of the country is by providing employment. Be it directly or indirectly, transportation has financially helped the labour class in improving their standard of living. Disruptive but developmental technology driven transport solutions are raising working standard for the workforce related to transport sector.

OPTIMUM UTILISATION OF ECONOMIC RESOURCES

With the transportation of goods from one place to another, it is now possible to use the resources of someplace far from yours. This leads to the non-wastage of resources by combining Full-load and Parcel-load through online booking solution. In fact, it results in optimum utilisation of resources, which further helps in strengthening the economy.

IMPORT AND EXPORT OF GOODS

It is an accepted fact that without transportation, the import and export of goods would never have been possible. But, with the existence of an efficient transportation system, businessmen can import goods that are not available in India, and can also export the finished product in the world market. Thus, it results in making the Indian rupee strong, eventually strengthening the economy.

STABILITY IN PRICES

With the help of transportation, goods can be transferred from where they are in high supply to where they are scarce. This results in the vendors not charging high prices for the scarce goods. It also results in making the goods available at all the places during a particular time, which further increases the supply of those goods and eventually helps strengthen the economy. Transparency in pricing is the most important factor for the businesses which redefined by online logistics service providers.

PRIME MINISTER’S INITIATIVE ON EFFICIENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM:

Efficient transportation is the backbone of the economy. Rail, road and off-road transport facilities have been serving economy in multiple ways. The Internet has redefined transportation and online transport booking services have taken it to a different level by increased transparency and feasibility.

RAILWAYS

When it comes to transportation, railways are undoubtedly the cheapest source of transportation. In the recent past, changes have been made in the railways which prove that they may be the cheapest but are definitely not low in quality.

    • a)      Executive lounge at railway stations: The first ever lounge has been opened at the New Delhi railway station, wherein the travellers can relax in a fully air-conditioned room with services like TV, WiFi etc. at a nominal rate of Rs.100 per hour.
    • b)      Fast Online Booking Portal – Irctc portal has gone through many changes in terms of technology and design which accelerated booking rates and revenue for the railway.
    • c)       Bullet train: It has been all over the news about the first bullet train that has been launched. The bullet train will be moving from Ahmedabad to Mumbai and vice versa and will cover a distance of 534 km in 2 hours. Prior to the bullet train, this distance was covered in around 8 hours.
    • d)      Refund on tatkal tickets: Recently, a notice was passed where it was made official that on the cancellation of a ticket booked through tatkal, the passenger will get a 50% refund.
    • e)      More coaches in Rajdhani and Shatabdi: It has also been made official that the coaches of two of the fastest trains in India, i.e. Rajdhani and Shatabdi will go up so that more and more people can travel at a time.

ROADWAYS

India boasts of having the second largest road network in the world. It carries nearly 90% of the country’s passenger traffic and nearly 60% of goods. Some of the recent changes in this sector are:

      • a)      National Highways and Infrastructure Development Cooperation (NHIDCL): NHIDCL, recently made it official that they have been awarded a contract to build tunnels worth Rs.23,000 in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
      • b)      Abertis Infraestructuras: Abertis Infraestructuras, a Spanish firm has signed a contract with the Indian government, wherein, they have agreed to purchase two toll road assets in operation in South India worth Rs.1,000 crore, so as to scale up the road network in India.
      • c)       National Highways Authority of India (NHAI): NHAI, has made it official to build 50,000 km of roads by the year 2022, as a part of their long-term plan. This has been made keeping in mind their plan of doubling the road network up to 2,00,000 km.
      • d)      Four-lane roads: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, made it official that the development of 19 km long four-lane roads shall be constructed in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
      • e)      Road Transport and Highways Ministry: The Road Transport and Highways Ministry have invested around 3.17 trillion US$ in order to construct world class roads and flyovers in the country.

Road Transportation can be categorized as transporting goods, material or people. In India, there are places where road transportation is the only way and hence plays the most important part of the economy and general lives.

Road transportation has been quite unorganized, irregular and undependable which raises major concerns for businesses and people to people goods delivery. Unstable and unequal cost also creates uncertainty for businesses which rely on road transport.

These major concerns can be solved only through the digital solution for transportation. Organizations like Trukky have built robust technology driven truck booking platform for full load and part load delivery which is helping business for truck booking and tracking in comparatively low cost than unorganised methods.  Truck owners and partners are getting the value which they never received in the unorganized sector.

AVIATION

Air transport has proved to be the fastest and the most modern source of transportation in India. It is also considered the easiest mode of transportation. Some of the changes made in the Aviation sector, by the Indian government in the recent past are:

        • a)      Third largest aviation market: As per an announcement made by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), India will become the third largest aviation market in the world by the year 2026. This is largely because of the investments that are being made in the aviation sector, so as to improve it and construct more and more air routes.
        • b)      Third largest domestic aviation market: As per an announcement made by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), India had replaced Japan and had become the third largest domestic aviation market in the world. It had a total of 100 million domestic flyers in the year 2016, as compared to Japan who had 96 million domestic flyers.
        • c)       Qatar Airways: Qatar Airways made an investment in the Indian Aviation sector and is now starting India’s first fully owned foreign airline.
        • d)      UDAN: Indian airline companies like SpiceJet, Air India, Air Deccan, Air Odisha and Turbo Megha have received a right to fly across 128 routes in India. This decision has been made by the Government of India’s regional aviation scheme named UDAN. As per UDAN, passengers will be flying across the country at a 50% rate.
